Finding Myself
When I first started recording I was just happy to make anything that sounded like a real song. As my recording (and playing) skills improved, I realized that I really could create my own CD. Looking at it from the perspective of making a whole album began the epic quest for “my sound”. When I was playing in cover bands my goal was to sound like other people. Suddenly I had to sound like myself. That was much harder than sounding like other people. Everything you play becomes a reflection of yourself and you can’t sound like anyone else (or at least you should try not to). I would contrive a style of music (Spacey, Grungy, Bluesy, Heavy, Rhythmic, etc.) and try to make each song fit that mold. I’d get a handful of songs recorded then dry up. I’d burn out on the project and finally give up. Weeks and months would go by and I’d be back in my “studio” working on a “new sound”. It was at the beginning of working on yet another “new sound” that I pulled out some of my older recordings for inspiration. As I listened to each song (or set of songs) I kept thinking, “That sounds pretty good!” I began to realize that all these sounds were “my sound”. I decided to make a CD out of my favorite tracks from previous projects. That CD became ‘3 in One’—Three different sounds in one album. |
